One thing ALWAYS makes me say “no” to a LinkedIn request. And you’ve seen it yourself, I’m sure.
It’s seeing the default “I’d like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn.” message as the ONLY thing someone says on the invitation to connect.
After all the advice that’s been printed, after all the “best practices” that have been shared, it stuns me to continue to receive such invitations.
And I know I’m not the only person who believes and reacts this way.
If you wish to connect with someone, the best way to get them to agree is to personalize the invitation. And it doesn’t take much to do so.
If you know the person, explain how. If you don’t know the person, explain why you’re requesting the connection. Say something that makes you “real” to the person you’re approaching.
After all, our connections are valuable. We’ve taken time to create who we link to. Whether you only connect with people you personally have met or whether you’re an “open networker/LION,” it doesn’t matter. You’ve invested energy in building your connections.
So, why would I want to open up my “treasure” to just anyone who asked? What value will you bring to the table when I link with you?
It can be as simple as saying “I like your posts and want to keep learning from you.” That works. It means there’s a professional common interest and/or the chance at some future business opportunity. You could even become a resource for me.
Or how about “I see we’re both believers in the power of user-centric thinking. I’d like to start a dialog. Would you be willing to check my Profile? And if you agree we have something in common, would you please accept my invitation to connect? Thank you!” Again, you’re sharing with me who you are and why it makes sense for us to connect.
I can think of just one exception to my rule – if a client asks to connect with me, I’ll accept without any additional messaging. After all, I have an existing relationship so I don’t really need to read any other reason.
But if we don’t have that client relationship, tell me something about yourself and why you want to connect with me.
Otherwise, “DELETE” is in your future.
